Carbon-Based Materials for Intelligent Optoelectronics, Photonics, and Sensing Technologies

Carbon-based materials-including graphene, carbon nanotubes, carbon quantum dots, fullerenes, nanodiamonds, and emerging hybrid carbon architectures—have revolutionized modern materials science owing to their exceptional electrical, optical, thermal, and mechanical properties. Their integration into optoelectronic devices, photonic systems, flexible electronics, and intelligent sensing platforms is driving innovations in next-generation communications, healthcare, environmental monitoring, and sustainable energy technologies. Furthermore, advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, multiscale modeling, and computational materials design are accelerating the discovery, optimization, and practical implementation of carbon-based materials with tailored functionalities. This Article Collection welcomes original research and review articles focusing on the design, synthesis, characterization, modeling, simulation, and emerging applications of carbon-based materials for advanced optoelectronic, photonic, and sensing technologies.Carbon-based materials have demonstrated remarkable potential for enabling high-performance electronic, optoelectronic, photonic, and sensing technologies. However, significant challenges remain in achieving scalable synthesis, controlled material quality, interface engineering, device reliability, and seamless integration into practical applications. In addition, establishing clear structure–property–performance relationships and developing standardized characterization and modeling approaches are essential for accelerating the translation of laboratory-scale discoveries into commercial technologies. Recent advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, computational materials science, multiscale simulations, and data-driven optimization have opened new opportunities to design carbon-based materials and devices with enhanced performance and reduced development time. The goal of this Article Collection is to provide a multidisciplinary platform for reporting recent advances in the synthesis, characterization, modeling, simulation, and application of carbon-based materials. It aims to bring together researchers working on fundamental materials science, device engineering, computational design, and emerging applications to address current challenges and foster innovative solutions for next-generation optoelectronics, photonics, flexible electronics, sensing technologies, energy systems, and intelligent devices. By promoting collaboration across disciplines, this collection seeks to accelerate the development and practical deployment of advanced carbon-based materials.
