Cardiotoxicity Associated with Cancer Management: Prevention, Detection, and Mitigation Across Systemic and Targeted Therapies
As cancer survival rates improve, cardiovascular complications arising from anticancer therapies have emerged as a critical determinant of long-term patient outcomes. Both conventional systemic therapies and newer targeted agents carry well-documented cardiotoxic risks—ranging from cardiomyopathy and arrhythmia to vascular dysfunction and mitochondrial injury—yet the mechanisms underlying individual susceptibility remain incompletely understood. The growing field of cardio-oncology seeks to close this gap, integrating precision approaches to identify vulnerable patients earlier, personalise cardioprotective strategies, and reduce the cardiovascular burden of life-saving cancer treatments across adult and pediatric populations. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding and clinical management of cancer therapy–related cardiac complications by examining how molecular, genetic, and data-driven approaches can improve prediction, early detection, and prevention of cardiotoxicity. Key questions include: What molecular and genetic factors determine individual susceptibility to treatment-induced cardiac injury? Can AI and machine learning models reliably identify patients at highest risk before or during therapy? What cardioprotective strategies show the greatest promise across different cancer treatment modalities? We welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Cardiovascular complications of anticancer therapies, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted agents• Cardiotoxicity in pediatric oncology populations• Drug-induced mitochondrial dysfunction and mechanisms of cardiac injury• AI-facilitated predictive frameworks for cardiotoxicity risk and cardioprotection• Integration of toxicogenomics and pharmacogenomics in cardio-oncology• Biomarker panels and cardiac surveillance strategies in cancer patients• Innovative imaging techniques for early detection of treatment-related cardiac dysfunction• Experimental models of therapy-induced cardiotoxicity• Translational and clinical studies on prevention and mitigation of adverse cardiovascular outcomes in oncologyWe welcome Original Research articles, Comprehensive Reviews, Mini-reviews, Clinical Studies, Methodology articles, Case Reports, and Perspectives.Dr. Vishal Arora is a Consultant at Boston Scientific Topic editors: Surendra Rajpurohit, Vishal Arora, Bhupesh Singla Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83655/cardiotoxicity-associated-with-cancer-management-prevention-detection-and-mitigation-across-systemic-and-targeted-therapies
