Case Reports in Pathology 2026
Pathology plays a central role in understanding disease mechanisms, refining diagnoses, and guiding therapeutic decisions. However, certain cases still challenge even experienced pathologists. This Research Topic aims to gather high-quality clinicopathological case reports that provide insight into rare and unexpected presentations, unusual disease evolution, or exceptional diagnostic and prognostic findings within human pathology.Anchored in the scope of the Pathology specialty of Frontiers in Medicine, this collection welcomes evidence-based case reports that synthesize morphological, immunohistochemical, molecular, and/or digital pathology data with clinical information. This Research Topic will strictly include Case Reports. Submissions must be original and must clearly indicate how the case advances knowledge or practice in pathology. The scope is intentionally broad to encompass the diverse subdisciplines of human pathology, including but not limited to:• Diagnostic challenges in rare or atypical pathological entities• Unusual histomorphological patterns that alter or refine current disease classification• Clinicopathological correlations that clarify mechanisms and etiology of disease processes• Molecular pathology case reports with implications for targeted or personalized therapy• Cases integrating digital pathology or artificial intelligence–based tools in diagnosis or prognostication• Autopsy-based case reports that illuminate disease mechanisms, unexpected complications, or causes of death• Cases illustrating novel or controversial approaches in morphology-based pathology• Technological and methodological innovations in tissue processing, staining, imaging, or molecular profiling• Use of in vitro, in silico, organoid, or organ-on-a-chip models in the workup or interpretation of individual cases, where relevant to human pathologySubmission Requirements• Only Case Reports are in scope for this Research Topic.• Manuscripts must clearly articulate the diagnostic, prognostic, or predictive relevance of the findings.• To be eligible, submissions must include “Case Report” in the article title.Through this focused collection, we aim to showcase how carefully documented and well-interpreted clinicopathological cases can drive innovation, refine diagnostic criteria, and support SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, ultimately improving patient care and outcomes in the field of Pathology.
