Catalysts for Hydrogen Storage: Key Materials, Breakthroughs, and Future Perspectives
Hydrogen storage represents one of the most critical challenges in advancing hydrogen energy technologies. Effective hydrogen storage requires catalytic materials capable of promoting rapid, reversible reactions under controlled conditions. Recent advances in catalysis have enabled significant progress towards overcoming existing limitations, yet the optimization of hydrogen storage efficiency, capacity, reversibility, and durability continues to spur vibrant research activity across chemistry disciplines.Historically, classical hydrides, porous carbon materials, and metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have dominated research interest due to their promising catalytic properties. Also, hydrogen storage in underground geologic materials has been shown to be a promising alternative, for which catalysts require deeper exploration. However, current developments place emphasis on innovative materials, such as nano-catalysts, single-atom catalysts, bimetallic alloys, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), and hybrid composites, demonstrating significantly improved catalytic performance and structural stability for hydrogen uptake and release. This Research Topic aims to assemble the latest experimental and theoretical advances in catalytic materials specifically targeting hydrogen storage. Contributions highlighting novel catalyst synthesis, characterization methodologies, mechanistic studies, and in-depth computational investigations are especially encouraged. Emphasis will be placed on original research articles, comprehensive reviews, and perspective articles that discuss current debates, pressing technological hurdles, and future directions toward scalable, efficient, and sustainable catalytic solutions.Ultimately, this Research Topic seeks to foster collaborative insights across chemistry sub-disciplines, driving innovation in hydrogen storage catalysis and contributing to a sustainable global energy economy. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review and Perspective articles on themes including, but not limited to:o Synthesis and characterization of novel hydrogen storage catalystso Advanced metallic and alloy-based hydrogen catalystso Nanostructured materials and composites for enhanced hydrogen catalysiso Porous materials (MOFs, COFs, Zeolites) design and catalytic propertieso Catalysts in hydrogen geologic and underground storageo Computational modeling of catalytic mechanisms in hydrogen storageo Stability, reversibility, and kinetic studieso Scale-up potential and environmental considerations Topic editors: Ernest ILISCA, Pedro Maciel De Paula Garcia, Katsuyuki Fukutani Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/75156/catalysts-for-hydrogen-storage-key-materials-breakthroughs-and-future-perspectives
