Catalytic Reaction Engineering for Sustainable Process Innovation

Catalytic reaction engineering is a cornerstone of modern chemical manufacturing, enabling the conversion of raw materials into valuable products through the use of catalysts. With increasing global emphasis on sustainability and environmental stewardship, the chemical industry faces urgent challenges in minimizing waste, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and maximizing energy efficiency. Despite advancements in catalyst development, significant gaps persist in integrating catalytic systems with innovative reactor designs that fully realize the potential of sustainable chemical processes. Recent studies have highlighted the pivotal roles of reaction kinetics, reactor configuration, and catalyst optimization in shaping process efficiency and selectivity. However, translating laboratory-scale breakthroughs into scalable, real-world applications remains a formidable hurdle, particularly when reconciling process intensification with the principles of green chemistry. This Research Topic aims to advance the understanding and application of catalytic reaction engineering and reactor design to foster sustainable chemical processes. The primary objective is to explore novel strategies, methodologies, and technologies that enhance catalytic efficiency while addressing environmental and economic constraints. Key questions include how catalyst-reaction-reaction-environment interactions can be better modeled, how reactor architectures can be developed for maximum resource utilization, and how digitalization and process integration can facilitate greener production pathways. To gather further insights in the interdisciplinary field of catalytic reaction engineering and reactor design for sustainable chemistry, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Novel catalyst development and characterization for sustainable applications• Innovative reactor design and process intensification strategies• Integration of renewable feedstocks into catalytic processes• Computational modeling and simulation of catalytic reactors• Scale-up challenges and transition from laboratory to industrial practice• Life cycle assessment and techno-economic analysis of catalytic processes Topic editors: Josep Mas-Roselló, Lara Kelly Ribeiro, Roger Marti Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80782/catalytic-reaction-engineering-for-sustainable-process-innovation
