Cellular Mechanisms of Exercise, Fasting, and Nutrition in Metabolic Homeostasis

Exercise, fasting, and nutrition are major physiological modulators of metabolic homeostasis. At the cellular level, these interventions influence mitochondrial dynamics, redox balance, nutrient and energy sensing, inflammatory signaling, and endocrine-metabolic crosstalk across metabolically active tissues. Their beneficial effects are increasingly recognized in conditions such as obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome, and related cardiometabolic dysfunction. However, important questions remain regarding the precise mechanisms that drive these adaptations, how responses differ across tissues and disease states, and how these interventions converge on shared or distinct metabolic pathways. This Research Topic aims to bring together high-quality studies that clarify how exercise, fasting, and nutritional interventions regulate cellular and molecular processes relevant to metabolic homeostasis. We welcome submissions of Original Research, Systematic Reviews, and Reviews that provide mechanistic insight into metabolic regulation in skeletal muscle, adipose tissue, liver, pancreas, vasculature, and immune compartments. Studies addressing these interventions alone or in combination are particularly encouraged, especially when they help define causal pathways and translational relevance.Key topics of interest include, but are not limited to:1. Mitochondrial dynamics, biogenesis, and quality control2. Redox signaling and oxidative stress responses3. Inflammatory pathways and immunometabolic regulation4. Nutrient sensing, substrate sensing, and energy-sensing pathways5. Endocrine and metabolic crosstalk between tissues6. Exercise- and fasting-induced cellular adaptation7. Insulin signaling and mechanisms of metabolic homeostasis or dysfunction8. Autophagy, proteostasis, and cellular stress responses9. Functional foods and bioactive nutrients as modulators of metabolic pathways10.
