Cerebral Venous Disorders: from Diagnosis to Endovascular Treatments
The cerebral venous system, long regarded primarily as a passive conduit for drainage, is now increasingly recognized for its crucial involvement in a wide spectrum of neurological disorders. Recent years have witnessed remarkable advancements in neurointerventional radiology, providing sophisticated tools and techniques to diagnose and treat complex cerebral venous conditions. This evolving understanding and the development of novel minimally invasive approaches have shifted the paradigm in managing these disorders. This Research Topic aims to provide a comprehensive overview of this dynamic field, creating a contextual framework for the significant recent progress and the growing focus within neurointervention on the CNS venous system. The primary goal of this Research Topic is to address the existing knowledge gaps and to highlight the transformative advancements in the diagnosis and endovascular management of cerebral venous disorders. We aim to tackle the challenges associated with standardizing diagnostic criteria and therapeutic strategies for conditions like idiopathic intracranial hypertension and cerebral venous thrombosis, and to explore the field of transvenous neurotechnologies. This collection will serve as a platform to present cutting-edge research, discuss recent breakthroughs in imaging, endovascular devices, and novel treatment paradigms, including the use of the venous system for implantable technologies. Ultimately, we seek to foster innovation, encourage collaborative research, and refine clinical practices to improve patient outcomes in this rapidly advancing subspecialty. This Research Topic welcomes any types of manuscripts supported by the journal, pertaining but not limited to the following themes:• The Venous Route to Therapy: Neurointerventional Advances for Cerebral Venous Outflow Disorders - This theme will focus on the critical need for standardizing diagnostic approaches (such as advanced imaging and manometry) and refining therapeutic techniques (like venous sinus stenting) for conditions including Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension (IIH) and pulsatile tinnitus, with an emphasis on patient-centered outcomes. • Endovascular Rescue for Cerebral Venous Thrombosis: Defining Benefit in High-Risk Populations - This theme aims to address the ongoing challenges in patient selection and technique standardization for endovascular thrombectomy in severe Cerebral Venous Thrombosis (CVT). It will focus on identifying patient subgroups who demonstrably benefit from intervention beyond anticoagulation.• Beyond the Lumen: Novel Transvenous Neurotechnologies for Brain Monitoring, Modulation, and CSF Diversion - This theme will explore the cutting-edge use of the venous system as a conduit for implantable devices, such as endovascular Brain-Computer Interfaces (e.g., Stentrode™) and minimally invasive Cerebrospinal Fluid (CSF) shunts (e.g., the eShunt™ System), examining their long-term safety, efficacy, and future potential.
