Challenges and Opportunities in Tumor Metabolomics, Volume II

This Research Topic is Volume II of a series. The previous volume, which has attracted over 30k views can be found here:Challenges and Opportunities in Tumor Metabolomics.Tumor metabolomics is an emerging field that characterizes metabolic alterations in tumor cells and the surrounding tumor microenvironment. These metabolic changes support cancer cell proliferation, survival, and adaptation to environmental stress. Metabolic reprogramming not only reshapes intracellular signaling and transcriptional regulation but also influences the availability of metabolites in the tumor microenvironment. In turn, these metabolites can modulate immune cell activation and effector functions, facilitating immune evasion and promoting tumor progression.Recent advances in multi-omics integration—combining transcriptomic, proteomic, and metabolomic profiling—have enabled the systematic mapping of links between transcriptional regulators, metabolic pathways, and metabolite dynamics. Such approaches provide a more comprehensive view of the regulatory networks underlying tumor metabolism and its interactions with immunity. Tumor metabolomics therefore holds strong potential to advance cancer research and translation, with applications in diagnosis, disease monitoring, and therapy development. Innovative therapeutic strategies, together with advanced drug delivery systems, are being explored to modulate tumor immunity and metabolism, offering new avenues for tumor intervention. A deeper understanding of these metabolic processes will be essential for improving treatment strategies and clinical outcomes for cancer patients. This Research Topic focuses on the investigation of metabolic alterations associated with tumor metabolism and the development of targeted therapeutic approaches informed by these insights. We invite contributions addressing the following themes: (i) Molecular Mechanisms, (ii) Metabolomics and Systems Biology, and (iii) Therapeutic Approaches.
