Childhood Nutrition in Low-Resource Settings
Optimal nutrition during infancy and childhood is fundamental to survival, growth, cognitive development, immune function, and lifelong health. Yet in many low-resource settings, children continue to face a complex and shifting nutritional landscape shaped by poverty, food insecurity, infectious disease, poor diet quality, climate shocks, displacement, and fragile food systems. Alongside persistent stunting, wasting, and micronutrient deficiencies, many settings are also experiencing a rising burden of overweight and obesity, highlighting the double burden of malnutrition. Advancing evidence-based solutions in this area is essential to support SDG 2: Zero Hunger and SDG 3: Good Health and Well-Being, while also contributing to more equitable and resilient food systems. This Research Topic aims to bring together high-quality research that improves understanding of the determinants, consequences, prevention, and management of childhood malnutrition in low-resource settings. We welcome interdisciplinary contributions spanning biological, clinical, behavioral, environmental, and policy perspectives, with a strong emphasis on nutrition relevance, implementation, and real-world impact. Studies from community, school, primary care, and humanitarian contexts are encouraged.Themes of interest include:• Infant and young child feeding, including breastfeeding, complementary feeding, diet diversity, and child food environments• Prevention and management of stunting, wasting, underweight, micronutrient deficiencies, and the double burden of malnutrition• Interactions between nutrition, infection, inflammation, gut health, and child development• Food-based, fortified, supplementary, school-based, and locally adapted nutrition interventions, including affordability, acceptability, and sustainability• Implementation science, policy, equity, and health-system approaches that support scalable, context-specific solutions in low-resource and crisis-affected settings Topic editors: Dawit Getnet Ayele, Zelalem G Dessie Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80557/childhood-nutrition-in-low-resource-settings
