Chiral 2D Material–Enabled Metasurfaces for Polarization Manipulation and Beamforming Across mmWave–THz Antennas

The field of antenna engineering is undergoing a profound transformation, driven by the convergence of chiral two-dimensional (2D) materials and artificially structured metasurfaces. These innovations enable unprecedented manipulation of electromagnetic wavefronts, surpassing the restrictions of traditional antenna architectures. Chiral 2D materials, with their innate handedness and anisotropic electromagnetic responses, alongside tunable optical properties, provide powerful new means for controlling the polarization state, phase, and amplitude of signals operating across the millimeter-wave (mmWave) and terahertz (THz) spectrum. With the rapid push toward 6G wireless systems, reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RIS), integrated photonics, and advanced THz sensing and imaging, synthesizing recent progress in this dynamic arena is both timely and critical for shaping future research and technological advances. This Research Topic aims to deliver a comprehensive and technically rigorous survey of how chiral 2D material–based metasurfaces are reshaping polarization control, adaptive beamforming, and multifunctional wavefront manipulation at mmWave–THz frequencies. It seeks to showcase key design principles, recent breakthroughs in device configurations, and practical demonstrations of functional antenna and system-level platforms - including tunable and reconfigurable architectures, RIS-assisted links, and 6G-oriented beam-steering concepts. It also addresses the persistent challenges and knowledge gaps - losses, scalability, large-area fabrication, device integration, packaging, and long-term reliability - that currently restrict commercial adoption and on-chip deployment. We welcome both theoretical and experimental/system-level contributions, spanning materials, devices, and end-to-end demonstrations. The collection will not extend to conventional bulk-material antennas or passive waveguide structures without active polarization, beamforming, or reconfigurability features. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:- Fundamentals and theoretical modeling of chirality in 2D materials and engineered metasurfaces- Innovative material synthesis approaches and structural design enabling tunable polarization and phase control- Tunable and reconfigurable metasurfaces for dynamic polarization, phase, and amplitude control- RIS-assisted communication and 6G beamforming applications enabled by chiral 2D-material metasurfaces- Multifunctional wavefront manipulation (polarization conversion, focusing, vortex/OAM beams, holography)- THz sensing and imaging systems, including biosensing, security, and non-destructive evaluation- Experimental realization and validation of chiral-integrated antenna concepts spanning mmWave to THz frequencies- Practical integration and fabrication aspects of 2D-material-based metasurfaces - CMOS/photonics compatibility, packaging, large-area processing, and reliability- Comparative studies of 2D materials, fabrication techniques, and resultant device performance metrics Topic editors: Jamal Kazmi, Ph.D., Thanh Son Pham, Naveen Kumar Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76655/chiral-2d-material-enabled-metasurfaces-for-polarization-manipulation-and-beamforming-across-mmwave-thz-antennas
