Climate Adaptation and Technological Integration in Agro-hydrological Systems

Beyond field-scale irrigation efficiency, agricultural adaptation requires understanding and managing water fluxes across the soil–plant–atmosphere continuum and across watershed to basin scales, including groundwater–surface water interactions, ecohydrological feedbacks, and hydroclimatic extremes. Understanding these complex interactions is complicated by long-term observations of accelerating occurrences of extreme climatic events and variability. Agricultural activity, which largely operates on an annual cycle, is particularly vulnerable to these observed and climatic changes due to observed increases in droughts, floods, and extreme events. Integrating technological response through innovative technology – such as remote sensing, internet of things, Artificial Intelligence/machine learning, decision-support systems, precision irrigation, sensor networks, modeling, and data fusion – is a promising area of research that could help to mitigate adverse effects associated with a changing climate in agricultural and hydrological systems. The goal of this Research Topic is to bridge disciplinary gaps between agronomy, hydrology, computer science, and policy to deliver actionable science for resilient food–water systems. By prioritizing empirical studies, interdisciplinary methods, and translational research that demonstrate measurable adaptation benefits, equity considerations, and scalability, this research topic aims to attract contributions from researchers and practitioners in agronomy, hydrology, environmental engineering, remote sensing, data science, policymakers, and NGOs. Ultimately we aim to advance next-generation agro-hydrological systems that integrate technological innovation with process understanding to enhance climate resilience, water security, and sustainable food production. This collection aims to address the latest climate change impacts on environments and adaptations, with respect to the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum, in particular, focusing on water management; explore the complex interactions among various ecosystem components relating to surface water, groundwater, and water application under extreme climatic events and variability; and Gather cutting-edge technological applications in hydrological ecosystem monitoring and management, particularly in agricultural operations, such as the application of artificial intelligence, remote sensing, machine learning, and variable irrigation technology in mitigating climate change and adaptation. We welcome papers focusing on, but are not be limited to, the following themes:• Climate-resilient irrigation: precision irrigation, deficit scheduling, sensor-driven water management.• Remote sensing & data fusion for drought/flood monitoring and crop stress detection.• AI/ML models for crop yield and hydrological forecasting under climate uncertainty.• Distributed sensor networks and IoT for real-time water–soil–crop management.• Nature-based solutions integrated with technology (managed aquifer recharge, wetlands).• Decision-support systems, participatory tools, and socio-economic evaluation of tech adoption.• Policy, governance, and equity implications of tech-driven adaptation.• Case studies demonstrating scalability, cost-benefit, and lifecycle environmental impacts.• Studies addressing cross-scale integration from plot-level sensor systems to basin-scale hydroclimatic modeling are particularly encouraged.
