Climate Resilient Livestock Production: Emerging Concepts, Innovative Tools and Adaptive Approaches for Optimising Health and Production

Climate change is intensifying both biotic and abiotic stressors, posing significant challenges to sustainable livestock production and global food supply chains. Rising climatic variability and the increasing frequency of heat stress events are expected to adversely affect animal health, productivity, and system sustainability. Addressing these challenges requires a decisive shift towards Precision Livestock Farming (PLF) — an approach that harnesses emerging technologies and data-driven methodologies to monitor, predict, and respond to climate-induced changes at the individual animal level. This collection provides an integrative platform focused on precision and technological solutions for climate-resilient livestock production. It will showcase cutting-edge PLF tools and methodologies — including sensor-based monitoring, artificial intelligence, remote sensing, and digital decision-support platforms — that enable real-time assessment of physiological, behavioural, and molecular responses to climate stressors. Advanced genomics, phenomics, and systems biology approaches will be highlighted as means of capturing climate-driven alterations with reproducibility and scientific rigour. This Research Topic will bring together studies evaluating precision and technological approaches to climate resilience in livestock, with an emphasis on both mechanistic understanding and practical on-farm application.Topics of interest include:1. precision and technological interventions for heat stress mitigation, including sensor-based monitoring, wearable devices, and environmental control systems;2. individual-level methane monitoring and reduction strategies, including real-time measurement technologies and data-driven mitigation approaches;3. climate-driven disease dynamics, including surveillance, predictive modelling, and digital epidemiology under shifting climatic conditions;4. biomarker-based early detection strategies for stress, disease, and productivity decline, drawing on genomics, phenomics, and systems biology.
