Coevolutionary Resilience of Host-Associated and Environmental Microbiomes Under Environmental Stress

Microbiome ecology and evolution examines how microbial communities respond to environmental change and influence the organisms and ecosystems with which they interact. Stressors such as pollution, climate change, and habitat alteration can affect microbiome composition and function, but it remains unclear when these changes reflect short-term community turnover and when they result from adaptation or reciprocal coadaptation. Experimental and comparative research has shown that microbial communities can change through processes including selection, dispersal, and shifts in host–microbe interactions. However, the conditions under which these processes support microbiome stability, recovery, or longer-term resilience and their consequences for hosts and ecosystem functioning remain insufficiently understood. A stronger focus on the underlying biological and evolutionary processes is needed to identify general principles across different microbiomes and stress contexts. This Research Topic aims to clarify how environmental stress shapes adaptation and coadaptation in host-associated and free-living microbiomes, and how these dynamics influence resilience, stability, and recovery. It seeks to identify the ecological and evolutionary drivers of microbiome change; determine when microbial or host responses help maintain or restore function; and assess the consequences of these changes for host health, adaptation, and ecosystem functioning. We welcome empirical, experimental, comparative, and theoretical work that addresses these questions, without privileging particular analytical technologies over the biological insights they enable. To gather further insights into coevolutionary drivers of microbiome resilience, this Research Topic focuses on evolutionary and ecological processes across host-associated and environmental microbiomes. It is distinct from work centered primarily on wild terrestrial or marine animal holobionts, conservation, or wildlife management, which is the focus of a related Research Topic. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:-Host–microbiome coadaptation under environmental stress.-Ecological and evolutionary drivers of microbiome resilience, stability, and recovery.-Reciprocal selection and feedback between microbial communities, hosts, and environmental conditions.-Consequences of microbiome change for host health, adaptation, and ecosystem functioning.-Experimental and theoretical studies of microbiome dynamics, adaptation, and evolution.
