Cold Plasma in Medicine: Mechanisms, Devices, and Emerging Therapies
Cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) has emerged as a promising frontier in the intersection of physics, materials science, and medicine. Over the past decade, research on CAP has progressed from understanding the physical and chemical properties of plasma to exploring its biological effects and medical potential. Despite substantial advances in understanding the underlying mechanisms, challenges remain in harmonizing device design, standardizing diagnostic tools, and establishing regulatory frameworks for clinical implementation. Current studies emphasize both the efficacy and safety of CAP applications, but reproducibility, long-term biocompatibility, and translational scalability are areas that demand deeper investigation. Bridging these gaps requires comprehensive collaboration across disciplines to transform CAP technologies into reliable medical interventions. This Research Topic aims to consolidate interdisciplinary research that expands the understanding, optimization, and translation of CAP-based technologies for medical use. It seeks to correlate plasma-induced chemical and biological modifications with measurable therapeutic outcomes, focusing on the interactions between reactive species, biological materials, and device parameters. The goal is to bring together physicists, materials scientists, biologists, and clinicians to present cutting-edge experimental and theoretical work, share standardized methodologies, and propose strategic approaches for regulatory and clinical integration. By fostering cross-disciplinary dialogue, the topic aspires to accelerate the safe and effective transfer of CAP from laboratory discoveries to clinical practice. To gather further insights into the evolving landscape of CAP in medicine, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Biochemical mechanisms of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) interactions with cells, microorganisms, and biomaterialso Innovative plasma diagnostic methods and device configurations for biomedical applicationso Pre-clinical and clinical studies exploring CAP in wound healing, antimicrobial therapy, and other medical useso Cold plasma-based sterilization protocols and their effects on biomaterial performance and safetyo Regulatory challenges, translational strategies, and commercialization pathways for plasma-based medical technologieso Direct and indirect influence of CAP on the biomaterial structure-property relationship Topic editors: Kathrina Lois Taaca, VIKAS RATHORE Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81578/cold-plasma-in-medicine-mechanisms-devices-and-emerging-therapies
