Collaboration and Trust in AI-Assisted News Production

Artificial intelligence (AI), particularly generative AI systems, is rapidly transforming the landscape of news production. From automated content generation and headline optimization to fact-checking assistance and audience analytics, AI tools are increasingly integrated into editorial workflows. While these technologies offer opportunities to enhance efficiency, support journalists in routine tasks, and expand the capacity of newsrooms, they also introduce complex sociotechnical challenges that reshape the relationships among journalists, editors, audiences, and the technologies themselves. Understanding how humans interact with and respond to AI in news production is therefore a critical area of inquiry. This Research Topic aims to explore the human dynamics surrounding the adoption and use of AI in journalism. As news organizations experiment with AI-assisted reporting, editing, and content management, journalists and editors must negotiate questions of trust, transparency, professional responsibility, and editorial authority. At the same time, audiences are increasingly encountering news that may be partially generated, summarized, or edited by AI systems. These developments raise important questions about how AI involvement is disclosed, how readers interpret such disclosures, and how these practices influence perceptions of credibility and trust in journalism. This collection seeks to stimulate research around, but not limited to, the following themes: • Journalist–AI collaboration in newsroom practices• Division of tasks between humans and automation• Editorial oversight in AI-assisted reporting• Transparency in AI use for news production• Audience responses to AI disclosures• Journalists’ and editors’ attitudes toward AI• Concerns about accuracy, bias, and identity• Ethics: misinformation, bias, accountability• Data security and intellectual property issues• AI’s impact on small and resource-limited newsroomsBy bringing together interdisciplinary perspectives from communication studies, journalism, human-computer interaction, information science, and AI research, we intend to advance our understanding of how AI is reshaping the production and reception of news.
