Collaboration in pharmacovigilance in an evolving information environment
Pharmacovigilance has long depended on collaboration — between regulators, manufacturers, healthcare professionals, and patients — to detect, assess, and prevent adverse drug reactions. Yet the information environment in which these activities occur is changing rapidly. The proliferation of real-world data sources, the expansion of digital health technologies, the rise of social media as a signal channel, and the growing application of artificial intelligence are reshaping how safety data is generated, shared, and interpreted. In this context, effective collaboration is no longer simply a matter of coordinating established workflows — it requires new frameworks, shared standards, and mutual trust across an increasingly diverse set of stakeholders. This Research Topic invites contributions that examine the evolving landscape of collaborative pharmacovigilance, with a particular focus on how partnerships are being redefined in response to new data sources, regulatory developments, and technological change. We welcome submissions exploring multisectoral collaboration between industry, regulators, academia, and civil society; the role of patient and healthcare professional reporting in enriching pharmacovigilance datasets; international harmonisation efforts and their impact on signal detection and risk management; and the use of federated data networks and data-sharing agreements to support post-market safety surveillance.Contributions may also address the ethical, legal, and organisational dimensions of collaboration, including data governance, privacy, intellectual property, and the challenge of aligning incentives across stakeholders with different mandates and priorities. We are equally interested in emerging collaboration models enabled by AI and machine learning — including their limitations, risks, and governance requirements — as well as lessons from real-world pharmacovigilance practice that illustrate both the promise and the barriers of partnership-based approaches. This collection aims to bring together perspectives from pharmacology, regulatory science, public health, data science, and health policy to advance a more integrated and responsive pharmacovigilance system. Original research articles, systematic reviews, methods papers, and perspective pieces are all welcome. This Research Topic is developed in association with the International Society of Pharmacovigilance (ISoP) Mid-Year Meeting 2026, Hatfield, UK.
