Commercialization and Industrialization of Pharmacology of Infectious Diseases: 2025
Building upon the foundational insights of our 2022 collection, this second volume, Commercialization and Industrialization of Pharmacology of Infectious Diseases: 2025, addresses the evolving landscape of anti-infective drug development. In the years since our inaugural volume, the urgency to bridge the complex gap between benchside discovery and clinical application has only grown. This update focuses on the shifting economic realities, regulatory adjustments, and technological leaps that now define the pathway from lab to market. This Research Topic aims to highlight advancements in the techniques, policies, materials, and methods used by industry, non-academic bodies, and academia to develop products and services for commercial use.We encourage contributions from scientists engaged in industrial and commercial projects to provide insights and forecasts on how the pharmacology of infectious diseases is utilized within the private sector. Equally, we welcome contributions from academia that assess the commercial viability of pharmacological innovations. A key goal of this volume is to identify specific challenges hindering the commercialization of drugs—from economic hurdles to pipeline bottlenecks—and to propose solutions that accelerate the delivery of viable pharmaceuticals. We welcome original research and review articles covering, but not limited to, the following topics:1. Industrial Challenges: Solutions for designing and developing therapeutic strategies for infectious diseases in a commercial context.2. Mechanisms of Action: Exploration of current and novel drug candidates against infectious diseases.3. Drug Resistance: Mechanisms of resistance and their impact on the advancement of new drug candidates.4. Combination Therapies: Analysis of innovative strategies and combinations for the commercialization of anti-infectives.5. Repurposing: Analysis of repurposing existing antibiotics and combinations for the treatment of infectious diseases.6. PK/PD Modelling (General & Phage): In vitro, in vivo, and/or phage PK/PD analysis of drug candidates, including semi-mechanistic and mechanism-based PK/PD modelling.7. Quantitative Systems Pharmacology (QSP) modelling: QSP modelling specifically for drug candidates treating infectious diseases.8. Safety Profiling: Toxicokinetics and toxicodynamics analysis and modelling of drug candidates.9. Pharmacoeconomics: The role of economic analysis in drug discovery and the viable treatment of infectious diseases.
