Comorbidities of Adrenal-Related Endocrine Disorders, Volume II

This Research Topic is the second volume of the article collection "Comorbidities of Adrenal-Related Endocrine Disorders". Please see the first volume here.Adrenal-related endocrine disorders, such as Addison’s disease, Cushing’s syndrome, mild autonomous cortisol secretion (MACS), and primary aldosteronism, represent a critical intersection of endocrinology and systemic disease. Despite significant advances in recognizing and treating primary hormonal imbalances, the spectrum of comorbidities linked to these conditions remains incompletely understood. Patients frequently experience complications including cardiovascular events, immune system abnormalities, and renal impairment, all of which impact long-term outcomes and quality of life. Current research highlights pressing questions around the mechanisms underlying these comorbidities, the varied clinical presentations, and the best strategies for diagnosis and management.Recent studies have drawn attention to high-risk features, such as the tendency for Addison’s disease to lead to cardiovascular dysfunction, the complexities surrounding glucocorticoid withdrawal in Cushing’s syndrome, and the immune perturbations associated with chronic cortisol excess. In MACS, debate persists as to the relative benefits of surgical versus conservative management, while inadequacies in diagnostic protocols for primary aldosteronism contribute to significant rates of underdiagnosis. Observational and longitudinal data continue to emerge, yet there remains a need for coordinated efforts to bridge knowledge gaps and address ongoing debates regarding clinical care and outcomes. This Research Topic aims to synthesize the latest evidence on comorbidities associated with adrenal-related endocrine disorders, clarify unresolved aspects of disease pathophysiology, and explore improved strategies for risk assessment, management, and long-term monitoring. The main objectives are to deepen understanding of how hormonal imbalances drive cardiovascular, renal, and inflammatory complications; evaluate the impact of therapeutic interventions on comorbidity profiles; and identify opportunities for earlier diagnosis and prevention of secondary disorders. To gather further insights in the field of adrenal-related endocrine disorders and their comorbidities, we welcome articles examining clinical, translational, and methodological advances, as well as reviews and expert perspectives. We particularly encourage submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Long-term cardiovascular outcomes in Addison’s diseaseo Mechanisms and management of glucocorticoid withdrawal and immune perturbations in Cushing’s syndromeo Comparative effectiveness of surgical versus conservative treatment for MACSo Improved diagnostic techniques for primary aldosteronism and long-term renal/cardiovascular sequelaeo The interplay of inflammation, immune function, and hormonal excess in adrenal disorderso Longitudinal cohort and registry studies on multimorbidity and mortalityo Development of predictive tools for risk stratification and early intervention Topic editors: Ivana Kraljevic, Emir Muzurovic Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76686/comorbidities-of-adrenal-related-endocrine-disorders-volume-ii
