Compact Particle Accelerators and Radiation Sources
Compact particle accelerators and radiation sources are enabling a new generation of scientific, industrial, medical, security, and environmental applications that traditionally relied on large-scale accelerator facilities. Advances in accelerator physics, high-frequency RF systems, high-gradient accelerating structures, novel particle sources, compact magnets, beam transport, controls, and radiation-generation technologies are making it possible to achieve increasingly high beam energies, currents, brightness, and power from substantially smaller and more efficient systems. This Research Topic will bring together recent developments in the science and engineering of compact particle accelerators and radiation sources, with particular emphasis on technologies that enable practical, deployable, and cost-effective systems and their applications.Topics of interest include:· Compact electron and ion accelerators· RF and DC accelerators· High-gradient and novel accelerating structures· Compact injectors and cathodes· Laser- and plasma-based acceleration· Compact RF power systems· Beam transport and focusing· Accelerator-driven radiation sources· X-ray, gamma-ray, neutron, and other secondary radiation sources· Radiation shielding and dosimetry· Accelerator system integration, controls, reliability, and thermal managementThe issue will also highlight applications of compact accelerators, including:· Radioisotope production· Medical therapy and diagnostics· Materials analysis and characterization· Non-destructive testing· Industrial processing· Environmental remediation· Food and agricultural applications· Security and inspection· Semiconductor and manufacturing applications· Mobile or field-deployable radiation systemsWe welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, and Perspective articles.
