Comparative and translational immunology of immune-mediated diseases in companion animals
Companion animals, including dogs, cats, horses, and other domesticated species, develop a wide range of naturally occurring immune-mediated, inflammatory, allergic, infectious, and autoimmune-like diseases. These conditions often share clinical, immunological, and molecular features with human immune disorders, while also reflecting species-specific immune regulation, environmental exposure, genetics, microbiome composition, and host-pathogen interactions. As such, companion animals provide valuable comparative and translational models for understanding immune dysregulation in naturally occurring disease settings. This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advances in the immunology of immune-mediated diseases in companion animals, with an emphasis on mechanisms, biomarkers, diagnostics, therapeutic strategies, and comparative insights across species. We particularly welcome studies that move beyond descriptive clinical observations to define immune pathways, cellular mechanisms, molecular signatures, host-microbiome interactions, or treatment responses relevant to both veterinary and human immunology.By bringing together veterinary immunology, comparative immunology, systems biology, and translational medicine, this Research Topic will provide a platform for studies that deepen our understanding of immune-mediated disease across species and help identify new diagnostic and therapeutic strategies for both animal and human health.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:• Immune-mediated and autoimmune diseases in dogs, cats, horses, and other companion animals• Allergic and inflammatory diseases, including atopic dermatitis, asthma, rhinitis, food allergies, and inflammatory bowel disease• Innate and adaptive immune mechanisms in naturally occurring companion animal diseases• T-cell, B-cell, macrophage, dendritic cell, mast cell, eosinophil, and neutrophil biology in disease pathogenesis• Cytokine, chemokine, complement, and interferon pathways in immune-mediated conditions• Host-microbiome-immune interactions in skin, gut, airway, oral, and urinary diseases• Immunological mechanisms of chronic infections and post-infectious immune dysregulation• Comparative immunology of vaccine responses, immune tolerance, and immune adverse events• Biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, disease stratification, and treatment monitoring• Single-cell, spatial, transcriptomic, proteomic, metabolomic, and systems immunology approaches• Immunotherapies, biologics, JAK inhibitors, monoclonal antibodies, cell-based therapies, and precision medicine in companion animals• Comparative studies linking companion animal immune diseases with analogous human disorders• One Health perspectives on shared environments, immune exposures, and translational disease mechanismsWe welcome Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, Methods, Brief Research Reports, Perspectives, and Opinion articles. Studies integrating clinical cohorts with mechanistic immunology, multi-omics, experimental models, or therapeutic response data are especially encouraged.
