Comparative Oncology: Bridging Human and Veterinary Medicine

Comparative oncology is an interdisciplinary field that merges human and veterinary cancer research, focusing on the genetic, molecular, and clinical similarities between cancers in humans and companion animals like dogs and cats. Despite traditional research efforts being separated into human and veterinary domains, there is substantial evidence that spontaneous cancers in companion animals closely resemble human cancers, offering a unique platform for translational research. This integration is pivotal in understanding cancer biology, drug response, and resistance mechanisms, as it leverages the natural tumor occurrence in animals like dogs, which share similar living environments and exposures with humans. Such models present a higher translational relevance than traditional murine models, thus enhancing preclinical study outcomes. This Research Topic aims to comprehensively characterize the molecular landscape of select cancers across humans and companion animals, evaluate the outcomes of comparative oncology clinical trials, and identify opportunities for the co-development of therapies and diagnostics. It seeks to propose integrated models that foster interdisciplinary collaboration, focusing on questions such as key genetic and molecular similarities between specific cancers in humans and canines, and how clinical trials in pet animals with spontaneous cancers can inform drug development for human oncology. To gather further insights in the field of comparative oncology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Systematic reviews of genetic, molecular, and therapeutic parallels in comparative oncology studies- Bioinformatics analyses comparing genomic and transcriptomic data from human and canine cancers- Case studies on the impact of comparative clinical trials on shared cancer research- Strategies for enhancing interdisciplinary collaboration between veterinary and human oncologists- Development of collaborative frameworks for clinical trial design, data sharing, and regulatory alignmentWe encourage submissions that span these themes and offer new perspectives on leveraging comparative oncology for advancing cancer treatments in both humans and companion animals.Submissions may include original research, review articles, case studies, and perspectives.
