Complex Dose-Response Relationships of Environmental Exposures on Health

Contemporary environmental health research predominantly focuses on the deleterious impacts of high-level or chronic environmental exposures, while the complex low-dose patterns remain understudied. Limited research has explored the detailed dose-response relationships of environmental exposures under specific conditions, including low-dose effects, biological thresholds, non-linear patterns, and adaptive biological mechanisms. The aim of this Research Topic is to address the long-standing emphasis on simple, linear exposure-response patterns, which frequently obscure the true complexity of how environmental factors influence human health. By integrating recent advances in toxicology, epidemiology, molecular biology, and biostatistics, this collection aims to fill this critical knowledge gap. Specifically, it will clarify how dose levels, exposure timing, duration, mixture patterns, and population susceptibility jointly determine health outcomes. This collective effort will refine current risk assessment , inform environmental standard setting, advance disease prevention, and provide clear directions for future translational research. We invite contributions to this Research Topic on subjects including, but not limited to:• Epidemiology: Investigation of complex, non-linear, and non-monotonic dose-response relationships between environmental exposures and health outcomes• Pharmacology/Toxicology: Experimental evaluation of low-dose effects, thresholds, and non-linear, or non-monotonic exposure-response relationships• Molecular biology: Analysis of adaptive mechanisms, cellular stress responses, and exposure-window-specific biological pathways• Bioinformatics/Biostatistics: Development and application of methodology for dose-response modeling, chemical mixture analysis, and causal inferenceManuscripts could consist of original research, systematic reviews, or perspective articles. We are particularly interested in studies that clearly define evaluated exposures , justify the selected dose ranges, rigorously evaluate exposure-response patterns, and control for confounding variables to ensure robust interpretation of complex health effects.
