Complex Networks of Cardiovascular and Physiological Oscillations

This Research Topic accompanies the 14th ESGCO Meeting (European Study Group on Cardiovascular Oscillations), held in Erice, Italy, from October 22 to 26, 2026. It invites contributions that extend and deepen the conference theme, “Complex Networks of Cardiovascular and Physiological Oscillations.”The cardiovascular system does not operate in isolation. Heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and cerebral activity form a dense network of interacting oscillators, coupled through mechanisms that span multiple time scales and physiological domains. Studying these interactions together, rather than in isolation, is the core aim of Network Physiology, and has direct value for clinical prediction, diagnosis, and monitoring. We are looking for original research articles, methods papers, and reviews that report new data, new analytical tools, or new models in this space. Suitable submissions include:• Cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory and cerebrovascular interactions• Networks of cardiovascular and physiological oscillations• Brain-heart and brain-body interactions• Heart rate variability• Blood pressure control• Noninvasive assessment of autonomic nervous system activity• Minimally invasive assessment of cardiovascular signals• Methodological approaches: time series analysis, modeling approaches, complexity, nonlinear tools, information theory• Multivariate and high-order analysis of physiological oscillations• Emerging analytical tools for the study of cardiac arrhythmias• Simulation, modelling, or computational studies on physiological network interactions• Clinical applications of cardiovascular oscillations in all their formWe welcome contributions across the topics discussed at ESGCO 2026, including network physiology, cardiovascular, cardiorespiratory, and cerebrovascular interactions, brain-heart interactions, heart rate variability, cardiac dynamics, and biomedical signal processing.Purely theoretical or purely descriptive submissions without a clear physiological or clinical application are less suited to this Research Topic. We particularly encourage submissions from ESGCO 2026 presenters, though the Research Topic is open to the wider community working on these questions. This Research Topic will be considered across all sections of Frontiers in Network Physiology.
