Computational Design, Structural Analysis, and Mooring Optimization for Offshore Wave and Tidal Energy Converters
Wave and tidal energy converters operate in some of the most demanding marine environments on the planet, where structural integrity, mooring reliability, and dynamic response directly determine device performance and operational lifespan. As the offshore renewable energy sector scales, there is growing need for validated computational tools and optimization frameworks capable of accurately simulating real-sea conditions and informing robust, cost-effective device design. Open questions remain around mooring system configuration, fatigue behavior under combined environmental loading, and the integration of simulation platforms with multi-objective optimization algorithms. Bridging the gap between numerical modeling and field performance is essential to accelerating the commercial readiness of wave and tidal technologies. Methodologies established in ship and offshore platform design optimization increasingly offer transferable frameworks for improving the structural efficiency and cost-effectiveness of next-generation converter concepts.Goal:The goal of this Research Topic is to bring together research that advances the structural and hydrodynamic design, mooring optimization, and computational simulation of offshore wave and tidal energy systems. We aim to highlight validated modeling approaches, experimental benchmarks, and engineering case studies that reduce uncertainty in performance prediction and support the deployment of reliable, cost-effective converters in real marine environments.Scope and information for Authors:We welcome focused contributions that advance the design and simulation of offshore wave and tidal energy systems.
