Continuous Monitoring Biosensors for Advanced Healthcare and Environmental Applications
Continuous biosensing is a rapidly advancing area at the intersection of materials science, biotechnology, and engineering, promising transformative impacts on healthcare, environmental monitoring, food safety, and defense. One of the central challenges in biosensor technology is achieving reliable, long-term measurement of physiological and biochemical targets in real time. Recent advances have brought forth a variety of innovative materials—ranging from nanomaterials and functional polymers to covalent organic frameworks and quantum dots—as well as hybrid and chiral composites that have significantly enhanced biosensor sensitivity, specificity, and operational longevity. Among these, chiral materials are of particular interest for their ability to interact reversibly and selectively with biomolecular enantiomers, offering high-fidelity detection without permanent sensor degradation. Despite impressive progress, ongoing gaps involve the integration of these advanced materials with robust, application-specific platforms and the development of truly regenerative, non-invasive sensor designs for continuous, real-world deployment. This Research Topic aims to spotlight recent breakthroughs and future directions in the engineering of continuous monitoring biosensors based on advanced material systems. The key objectives are to uncover new surface chemistries and interface designs—especially those that employ engineered nanomaterials and chirality for selective, reversible, and regenerable analyte detection—and to explore the development of wearable or implantable sensor platforms across a diverse set of sensing modalities. An additional focus is on strategies to preserve sensor functionality over prolonged periods through reversible binding and regeneration mechanisms. By fostering a multidisciplinary approach, the Research Topic seeks to accelerate innovations in sensor design, material integration, and holistic system validation for emerging healthcare and public safety needs. The Research Topic is limited to biosensing systems emphasizing continuous, real-time, and reusable monitoring utilizing advanced and functional materials. It does not cover single-use or batch-mode sensors that lack regenerative or reversible features.
