Control and Design of Power Electronic Converters in Modern Power Systems

This Research Topic focuses on the growing role of power electronic converters as the core building blocks of modern power systems, including renewable energy integration, grid-tied applications, and energy conversion networks. As power systems evolve with high penetration of renewable generation, energy storage, and power-electronic-interfaced loads, there is a clear need for robust methods to design, control, and operate power electronic converters with high efficiency, stability, and reliability. This topic will explore current challenges such as advanced converter topologies, control strategies for grid-following/grid-forming operation, stability analysis and oscillation suppression, high-efficiency modulation techniques, and the integration of converters into complex modern power systems. By bringing together work on system modeling, advanced control, experimental validation, and practical deployment, this collection aims to support the development of more efficient, stable, and resilient power electronic converter solutions for next-generation energy infrastructures.Goal:The goal of this Research Topic is to gather innovative research and practical insights that advance the design, control, modeling, and practical deployment of power electronic converters for modern power systems and low-carbon applications. We aim to highlight progress in converter topologies, advanced control and modulation, stability analysis and mitigation, system-level coordination, and design optimization methods that improve efficiency, flexibility, and reliability in converter-based power systems.Scope and information for Authors:We welcome focused contributions that advance the modeling, design, control, integration, and deployment of power electronic converters in modern power systems. Topics can include:• Advanced converter topologies and design optimization for modern power system applications• Control strategies (including grid-following, grid-forming, and multi-objective control) for power electronic converters• Stability analysis, oscillation suppression, and control design for converter-dominated power systems• High-efficiency modulation techniques, power loss modeling, and thermal design of converters• Converter integration with renewable energy sources, energy storage systems, and distribution networks• System-level modeling, optimization, experimental validation, and real-world applications of power electronic converters in modern power grids Topic editors: Feng An, Bin Cui, Qianhao Sun Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81006/control-and-design-of-power-electronic-converters-in-modern-power-systems
