Control Mechanisms and Climate Change Impact of Bud Dormancy and Flowering in Perennial Plants
Bud dormancy in perennial plants is a critical adaptive strategy that ensures survival during unfavorable winter conditions and determines the timing of bud break, flowering, and seasonal growth. Recent research has clarified how environmental cues such as temperature, photoperiod, and water availability interact with genetic and molecular regulators to control the dormancy cycle. However, shifting seasonal temperatures and unpredictable winter conditions present challenges to this finely tuned process, affecting the productivity of horticultural and forestry species. While progress has been made in model species, there remain extensive knowledge gaps regarding the integration of environmental signaling, epigenetic regulation, and adaptation in diverse perennial taxa. This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of the multifactorial regulation of bud dormancy and flowering in perennial plants. We seek to unite studies investigating the physiological, molecular, and ecological mechanisms controlling dormancy transitions and flowering progression. By bringing together genomics, environmental physiology, and practical agronomic manipulation, this initiative aims to identify both universal and species-specific determinants of dormancy control. These insights will support the breeding and management of cultivars adapted to variable environments, ensuring stability in fruit and timber production. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: -Genetic, epigenetic, and molecular pathways regulating bud dormancy, growth resumption, and blooming.-Temperature and photoperiod interactions controlling dormancy induction and release across diverse perennial species.-Chemical, hormonal, and physical methods to control dormancy and flowering in commercial perennials.-Genetic diversity, low-chill requirements, and breeding strategies for regional climate adaptation.
