Critical Health Literacy, Measurement, and Interventions for Evaluating Health Information

People must make health decisions based on a deluge of health information, misinformation, and disinformation. Health misinformation continues to spread rapidly across digital and social media channels, undermining public trust in medical evidence and shaping health decisions with real consequences for individuals and communities. While digital and low-cost interventions such as podcasts, videos, and brief educational tools show growing promise in strengthening the public’s ability to evaluate health claims, the field still lacks standardized, cross-culturally validated instruments to measure critical health literacy, and rigorous trial evidence remains limited outside a small number of contexts. This Research Topic invites contributions that advance both the measurement and the intervention side of critical health literacy. We welcome studies on the psychometric development, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation of instruments assessing critical health literacy, claim evaluation skills, and evidence-based decision-making; randomized and quasi-experimental evaluations of digital, audio, video, and other scalable interventions designed to help critically evaluate health information and counter health misinformation; implementation science approaches to delivering health literacy tools across underserved, multilingual, and historically marginalized communities; and community-partnered or culturally responsive models for assessing treatment preferences and public trust in health evidence.By bringing together measurement science and intervention research, this collection aims to build a stronger evidence base for how critical health literacy can be assessed reliably across populations and improved at scale.Scope:· Psychometric development, adaptation, and cross-cultural validation of critical health literacy and claim-evaluation instruments.· Randomized and quasi-experimental evaluations of digital, audio, video, and other scalable interventions to help critically evaluate health information and counter health misinformation.· Implementation science for delivering health literacy tools across underserved, multilingual, and historically marginalized communities.· Community-partnered or culturally responsive models for assessing treatment preferences and public trust in health evidence.
