Cutting-edge Nanotechnology for Advanced Diagnosis and Treatment Integration

Intelligent diagnosis and treatment nanomaterials are at the cutting edge of biomedical research, leveraging advancements in nanotechnology to address complex health challenges. These materials masterfully integrate diagnostic and therapeutic functionalities through stimuli-responsive mechanisms, enabling real-time disease monitoring and precision drug delivery. Recent developments have featured the use of quantum dots and gold nanoparticles to enhance imaging sensitivity, while novel nanocarriers have improved drug targeting and reduced side effects. Despite these advances, the field still grapples with pertinent challenges in biosafety, mass production, and clinical translation. Optimizing material design and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration hold the key to transforming treatment paradigms for diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disorders, and neurodegenerative ailments, ultimately ushering in the era of personalized nanomedicine. This Research Topic aims to tackle three pivotal challenges in integrating theranostic nanomaterials: insufficient biosafety, poor diagnostic-therapeutic synergy, and barriers to clinical translation. Addressing these issues involves incorporating bioinspired modifications like cell membrane coatings, designing multimodal-responsive systems with triggers like pH and reactive oxygen species (ROS), and employing microfluidic synthesis for enhanced targeting and drug release control. Recent strides have led to AI-optimized nanocarriers offering high drug loading efficiency, the development of degradable quantum dots to lessen heavy metal toxicity, and the advent of organ-on-a-chip technology for accelerated preclinical testing. Nonetheless, substantial breakthroughs demand comprehensive toxicology data and strategic interdisciplinary efforts to overcome standardization and production challenges. To gather further insights in the interdisciplinary research of intelligent diagnosis and treatment nanomaterials, focusing on new material design, diagnosis and treatment mechanisms, and clinical transformation research, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:o Bionic nanocarriers (exosomes/cell membrane modification)o Multi-modal diagnosis and treatment systems (optical/MRI/radionuclide integration)o AI-driven material design and optimizationo Microfluidic large-scale preparation processeso Organ chip and organ-like evaluation modelsPriority is given to original research, including preclinical data, in-depth reviews of recent progress, and methodological innovations in characterization and preparation technology. Pure computational simulation research will not be accepted.
