Cytoskeletal Dynamics and Cellular Communication in Plant Development
Plant developmental biology is witnessing rapid advances in understanding the roles of cytoskeletal interactions in shaping growth, morphology, and organogenesis. At the heart of these processes lies an intricate network of cellular mechanisms that perceive and convert physical stimuli and hormone signals into highly orchestrated cytoskeletal remodeling events. Despite substantial progress illuminating the molecular players and subcellular imaging of structural changes, key questions remain regarding how cells interpret mechanical and chemical cues to coordinate cytoskeletal dynamics with membrane trafficking, thereby establishing patterns of cell polarity, division, and differentiation essential for tissue patterning and organ formation. Recent studies have shed light on the functional interplay between actin and microtubules, alongside the critical dialog between cytoskeletal elements and membranes in processes such as tip growth, diffuse cell expansion, and division plane orientation. However, significant knowledge gaps persist in linking these mechanisms at the cellular level to broader patterns of tissue and organ level development, including vegetative and reproductive growth. This Research Topic aims to elucidate the causal relationships between cytoskeletal dynamics, membrane interactions, and signal transduction in the context of plant development. Major objectives include uncovering how mechanical and hormonal cues direct cytoskeletal organization, determining how these changes influence cell polarity and division, and integrating these cellular events with morphogenetic processes that shape tissues and organs. It also seeks to encourage innovative studies and syntheses that bridge developments from subcellular mechanisms to whole-organ function, and to highlight advances in methodology and conceptual frameworks that accelerate understanding in this dynamic field. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses studies on cytoskeletal remodeling and cellular communication as drivers of plant development, with a particular focus on the connections between cellular mechanisms and tissue and organ-level outcomes.
