Decoding Host-pathogen Dynamics in Salmonella Infection

Salmonella infection remains a formidable global health challenge, responsible for significant morbidity, particularly in the context of foodborne outbreaks and antimicrobial resistance. The intricate interplay between Salmonella pathogens and their human hosts drives both acute and chronic disease outcomes, often complicated by the bacterium’s ability to evade immune responses and persist in intracellular reservoirs. Understanding these host-pathogen dynamics is essential for combating the increasing prevalence of multidrug resistant Salmonella strains and for informing the design of innovative, effective health interventions. This article collection brings together research addressing diverse yet interconnected aspects of Salmonella infection in humans. Central themes include the mechanisms by which Salmonella manipulates host cellular pathways, the strategies employed by the host immune system to clear infection, and the clinical impact of persistent intracellular reservoirs. Special emphasis is placed on translational approaches, such as the use of organoid models to dissect host responses, exploration of human-specific disease mechanisms, and novel therapeutics, including bacteriophage therapy, targeting multidrug resistant strains. Together, these contributions aim to deepen our understanding of immune defense, pathogen adaptation, and therapeutic innovation as they relate to Salmonella infections. The collection welcomes articles related but not limited to the following areas.- Original research on host immune responses facilitating the inhibition or clearance of Salmonella in human infections- Reviews or minireviews on intracellular reservoirs and persistence mechanisms of Salmonella within human hosts- Studies investigating the molecular mechanisms of Salmonella-host cell interactions, including manipulation of host cellular pathways- Research on Salmonella survival strategies within human macrophages and epithelial cells- Experimental models utilizing human-derived organoids to study Salmonella infection dynamics- Research on the identification and targeting of host or bacterial factors critical to intracellular survival and relapse- Investigations of bacteriophage therapy as a treatment for multidrug resistant human Salmonella infections- Reviews detailing therapeutic innovations for Salmonella disease, including antibiotics, immunomodulators, and phage-based approaches- Perspectives on emerging challenges and opportunities in the management of human Salmonella infections- Methodological advances for studying Salmonella-host biology with human-relevant models and multi-omics approaches Topic editors: Blanda Di Luccia, Junxin Zhao, Rimi Chowdhury Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83305/decoding-host-pathogen-dynamics-in-salmonella-infection
