Deep Eutectic Solvents: Catalysts for Sustainable Organometallic Synthesis

Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are promising green alternative compounds for volatile organic compounds (VOCs), ionic liquids (IL), polar solvents, catalysts, adsorbents, and reagents in recently developed sustainable technologies. These complexes of hydrogen-bond donors (HBDs) and HB acceptors (HBAs), are produced from readily available solids at a definite molar ratio. Due to the advantages of simple preparation, adjustability, atom economy, and high polarity, numerous types of hydrophilic, hydrophobic, natural, magnetic, and ternary DESs (TDESs) have been developed. On the other hand, in advanced organic chemistry catalysts are recognized as fundamental to make reactions selective, efficient and achievable in a single step. The presence of the catalyst in synthetic processes also allows the realization of reactions in highly sustainable conditions. Catalysts enable more efficient, selective, and sustainable transformations, which are vital for industrial applications and fundamental research.Solvents are a fundamental reaction component but also the major organic component of the chemical process. This entails management and disposal issues of solvents that impact the economy of the processes themselves. DESs, prepared often from natural precursors and with low environmental impact, are considered alternative solvents for chemical reactions. On the other hand, DESs are very convenient because they can be recycled and reused several times when studied in metal-catalyzed processes. In catalysis, DESs play a dual role: they can act as environmentally friendly reaction media and, in many cases, actively participate in the catalytic process. Their highly structured hydrogen‑bond network, polarity, and ability to stabilize reactive intermediates often enhance reaction rates and selectivity. Moreover, DESs can be tailored to incorporate catalytic species directly into their matrix, enabling innovative catalytic systems with improved efficiency and sustainability. The purpose of this research topic will be to collect original manuscripts or reviews that emphasize one or more of the following points:• New reactions performed in Deep Eutectic Solvents (DESs) as Catalysts for Sustainable Organometallic Synthesis• Investigate the role of DESs as catalytic media capable of enhancing reactivity, selectivity, and stability in organometallic transformations.• Explore DES–metal interactions, focusing on how coordination, solvation, and hydrogen‑bond networks influence catalytic cycles.• Promote the design of metal‑containing or metal‑stabilizing DESs, enabling task‑specific catalytic systems with improved performance.
