Deficit Irrigation and Salinity Management

Deficit irrigation has been the mainstream of irrigation science in this century and hundreds of papers have been published. Many claimed that deficit irrigation treatments gave higher water productivity than conventional ones. However, they may not be valid in the long term under dry and saline conditions. To avoid salt accumulation in the root zone under a dry climate, salts must be leached out below the root zone by intentionally carrying out "over-irrigation". To compromise water saving and salinity control, sophisticated schemes may be required. In this Research Topic, we call for papers that examined:- Results of deficit irrigation in the long run;- Criteria of precipitation and salinity of irrigation water which allows deficit irrigation without artificial leaching;- Presentation and evaluation of better schemes of water and salinity management.
