Dengue as a Public Health Priority: Integrating Genomic Surveillance, Vector Biology, and Innovative monitoring and Control Strategies
Dengue is currently one of the most significant and rapidly expanding vector-borne diseases worldwide, posing substantial challenges to public health systems, particularly in tropical and subtropical regions. The unprecedented increase in dengue incidence observed in recent years highlights the need for multidisciplinary approaches that integrate genomic surveillance, vector ecology, epidemiology, and innovative monitoring and control strategies. Advances in sequencing technologies, molecular diagnostics, entomological surveillance, and data integration have created new opportunities to better understand viral transmission dynamics and strengthen preparedness and response efforts. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge research addressing dengue across the spectrum from laboratory investigations to field-based and public health applications, with a clear focus on translating these findings into population-level insights and disease control strategies.By fostering collaboration among researchers from diverse disciplines, we seek to promote innovative and translational approaches that can contribute to more effective surveillance, prevention, and control of dengue in both endemic and emerging settings. The primary objective is to bridge laboratory and field-based insights—such as vector biology and molecular virology—with active epidemiological surveillance and public health programs. By integrating molecular, ecological, epidemiological, and implementation perspectives, this Research Topic seeks to identify knowledge gaps, highlight innovative methodologies, and support evidence-based, scalable strategies for reducing the global burden of dengue and protecting vulnerable populations. We welcome contributions that advance our understanding of dengue transmission, surveillance, and public health control. Themes of particular interest include:• Genomic and molecular epidemiology of dengue virus (DENV)• Vector competence and ecology in relation to transmission dynamics• Public health implications of insecticide resistance• Population-level entomovirological surveillance• Early warning systems and integrated vector management• Health system preparedness• Effects of urbanization and climate change on dengue transmission• Co-circulation of dengue with other arboviruses (e.g., Zika, chikungunya) and implications for surveillance and public health interventionsWe welcome original research articles, reviews, systematic reviews, perspectives, methods papers, policy and practice reports, and interdisciplinary studies.
