Design and Development of Advanced Nuclear Energy Materials

The advancement of nuclear energy systems—ranging from Generation IV reactors to small modular reactors and fusion devices—relies heavily on the development of high-performance materials capable of operating under extreme conditions. These include high temperatures, intense radiation fields, corrosive environments, and mechanical stress. The behavior of materials under such conditions determines the safety, efficiency, and longevity of nuclear systems. Recent progress in materials science, including nanostructured alloys, ceramics, and composites, offers new opportunities to address these challenges. However, the translation of laboratory-scale innovations to engineering applications remains a critical hurdle. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge research on the design, characterization, and performance evaluation of materials for advanced nuclear applications. We seek to address key challenges such as radiation damage mechanisms, material degradation under extreme environments, and the development of accident-tolerant materials. By integrating experimental, computational, and theoretical approaches, we hope to accelerate the discovery and deployment of next-generation nuclear materials. Contributions that explore multiscale modeling, in-situ characterization, and advanced manufacturing techniques are particularly encouraged. The ultimate goal is to foster a deeper understanding of material behavior in nuclear systems and to promote innovative solutions that enhance reactor safety and sustainability. We welcome articles on topics including but not limited to:• Radiation effects in structural materials and fuels • Advanced manufacturing of nuclear materials (e.g., additive manufacturing)• High-temperature alloys and ceramics for reactors• Accident-tolerant fuel cladding materials• Corrosion and aging mechanisms in nuclear environments• Multiscale modeling of material performance• Materials for fusion reactors• Novel characterization techniques (e.g., in-situ, operando).
