Development of New Antimicrobials in Combat Against Pathogenic Microbes in Tropical Diseases

Pathogenic bacteria affect various parts of human body such as lungs, skin, nervous system and urinary tract. Most commonly encountered diseases caused by bacteria are cholera, leprosy, buruli ulcer, trachoma, leptospirosis, yaws, etc. In general, antibiotics are used to treat bacterial infections. The extended use of antibiotics induces antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in microbial cells. A report in 2019 states that 1.27 million deaths are reported due to microbial infections with AMR across the globe. In 2022, 4.95 million deaths are reported globally due to the same reason. As a consequence, new antibacterial agents are necessary to continue fight against pathogenic bacterial infections. As the problem of antimicrobial resistance develops in pathogenic bacteria, society needs new-generation antimicrobials to fight against these microbes. Thus, the goal of the computational chemist is to design new generation antimicrobials which target different enzymes or proteins of microbes, while that of the organic chemist is to synthesize possible novel antimicrobials by preferably employing the green chemistry principles and that of medicinal chemists is to analyze antibacterial activity of newly synthesized compounds and to study their mechanism of action. Therefore, the combined efforts of computational chemists, organic chemists and medicinal chemists would definitely address the problem of antimicrobial resistance. The ultimate goal is to suppress the deaths caused by pathogenic bacteria. This Research Topic welcomes high-quality research articles and reviews on antimicrobial studies of natural and synthetic compounds against pathogenic bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), etc. It also considers clinical studies of antimicrobials related to tropical diseases. Articles which report isolation or synthesis of chemical entities, their spectral characterization, antimicrobial activities and mechanism of action are considered. Reviews which collect literature on a specific scaffold and shed light on structure activity relationships are also considered. Special emphasis will be given to research on pathogenic bacteria like Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus (VRE), Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE), and other drug-resistant bacteria.
