Developments in Bioprocesses for Sustainable Agriculture and Agro-Food Processing
Sustainable agriculture and agro-food processing increasingly depend on innovative bioprocesses that improve productivity, resource efficiency, environmental performance, and product quality. Technologies based on microbial, enzymatic, fermentation, and bio-based methods present promising opportunities to transform agricultural production and food processing systems. These advancements support circular bioeconomy strategies and help reduce the environmental impact of agro-industrial activities. This Research Topic aims to highlight recent advances in developing, optimizing, and implementing bioprocesses for sustainable agriculture and agro-food processing. Particular emphasis will be placed on biological and engineering approaches that contribute to producing bioinputs, valorizing agro-industrial residues, developing sustainable food processing technologies, and generating value-added products. Contributions addressing process design, intensification, monitoring, modeling, control, scale-up, automation, life cycle assessment, and techno-economic analysis are especially encouraged. We welcome Original Research, Review, Mini Review, Perspective, and Opinion articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:• Microbial, enzymatic, and fermentation-based bioprocesses for agricultural and agro-food applications• Biofertilizers, biostimulants, biopesticides, and other bioinputs for sustainable crop production• Bioprocesses for valorization of agro-industrial residues and by-products• Sustainable food processing, preservation, and transformation technologies• Production of functional ingredients, bioactive compounds, enzymes, organic acids, and biopolymers• Bioreactor design, process optimization, intensification, and scale-up• Monitoring, modeling, automation, and digitalization of agro-food bioprocesses• Artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven approaches in bioprocess development• Life cycle assessment, techno-economic analysis, and environmental performance of bioprocesses• Circular bioeconomy approaches for sustainable agriculture and food systemsThis Research Topic provides an interdisciplinary platform for researchers working at the interface of biotechnology, agricultural sciences, food engineering, environmental sustainability, and process engineering, aiming to advance bioprocess-based solutions for more resilient, efficient, and sustainable agro-food systems.
