Diabetes Care and Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Settings: Innovations, Challenges, and Lessons for Global Practice
Diabetes remains a leading cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, with the greatest and fastest growing burden occurring in low and middle income countries. In these contexts, limitations in diagnostics, access to essential therapies, workforce capacity, and health system infrastructure shape diabetes care and outcomes in ways that are not usually represented in the global literature. At the same time, innovative, context-adapted approaches emerging from these settings offer valuable insights for improving diabetes care globally. This research topic aims to highlight clinical, biological, and health system factors influencing diabetes care and outcomes in resource-constrained settings. It seeks to showcase innovative strategies, models of care, and policy-relevant evidence that address context-specific challenges across all forms of diabetes. By bringing together diverse perspectives, this theme aims to generate lessons that can inform equitable, effective diabetes care in both low and high resource settings. Suitable themes for manuscripts include (but are not limited to):• Diagnosis and classification of diabetes in LMIC settings• Clinical outcomes across diabetes subtypes in LMICs• Access to essential diabetes medicines and technologies• Health system barriers and facilitators to diabetes care delivery• Innovative models of diabetes care in resource-constrained settings• Context-adapted clinical guidelines and care pathways• Digital health and point-of-care innovations for diabetes management• Equity, financing and policy determinants of diabetes outcomes• Diabetes care across the life course in resource constrained settings• Lessons from resource constrained settings for global diabetes practiceConflict of Interest Declaration: Topic Editor Felix Jebasingh received educational grants from NovoNordisk foundation and Topic Editor Davis Kibirige received travel grants from Microlabs Pharmaceutical Limited.
