Diabetes Mellitus, Hypertension and Auditory-Vestibular Disorders: Clinical Dilemmas and Current Recommendations Amidst Ongoing Controversies

Diabetes mellitus and hypertension are among the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and represent major contributors to global morbidity and mortality. Their potential impact on auditory and vestibular function has long been recognized; however, the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms, causal relationships, and clinical correlations remain debated. Research indicates possible links through microvascular compromise, metabolic dysregulation, and oxidative stress, yet the strength and clinical significance of these associations vary across populations. As the incidence of diabetes and hypertension continues to rise globally, there is growing urgency to deepen our understanding of how these systemic conditions influence otologic and neurotologic health. Advancing this knowledge could inform prevention, diagnosis, and management strategies for sudden sensorineural hearing loss, tinnitus, and vestibular dysfunction, particularly in low- and middle-income countries where healthcare resources and access to specialized audiological care are limited. This Research Topic aims to advance knowledge on the complex interactions between diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and auditory-vestibular disorders. By integrating evidence from clinical, experimental, and translational research, the initiative seeks to clarify pathophysiological pathways, refine diagnostic algorithms, and strengthen clinical practice guidelines. An additional focus lies in promoting cross-disciplinary dialogue to support patient-centered care models that improve both outcomes and quality of life. Ultimately, the Research Topic aspires to generate actionable insights that aid healthcare professionals in navigating diagnostic uncertainty, optimizing individualized treatment, and addressing disparities in otologic care worldwide. To gather further insights into the multifaceted impact of diabetes mellitus and/or hypertension on auditory and vestibular disorders, we welcome original research, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, clinical studies, and case reports addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Mechanistic studies exploring how diabetes and hypertension contribute to cochlear and vestibular pathology (e.g., microangiopathy, metabolic and oxidative mechanisms)- Clinical case studies highlighting diagnostic dilemmas, management challenges, and therapeutic decision-making- Implementation science and healthcare delivery models, including strategies for tinnitus and balance disorder management- Health equity, accessibility, and culturally informed interventions tailored for underserved and diverse populations- Advances in diagnostic tools, biomarkers, and rehabilitation strategies for affected patients Topic editors: Annette Kaspar, Cherine Charfeddine, Carlie Driscoll Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82588/diabetes-mellitus-hypertension-and-auditory-vestibular-disorders-clinical-dilemmas-and-current-recommendations-amidst-ongoing-controversies
