Dietary Polyphenols and Plant Bioactives: Green Extraction/Processing, Bioavailability, and Roles in Metabolic, Cardiovascular, and Neuroinflammatory Health

Dietary polyphenols and other plant-derived bioactives are widely recognized as promising components for functional foods and nutrition-based strategies aimed at reducing chronic disease risk. However, their successful translation from laboratory evidence to effective interventions remains hindered by inconsistencies in extraction, processing, and the complexity of bioactivity in physiological settings. Traditional extraction techniques often carry environmental risks and can lead to variable or unstable products, while the inherent poor bioavailability and intricate metabolic fate of polyphenols pose further challenges. A growing consensus recognizes the need for fully integrated approaches that connect green, sustainable extraction with state-of-the-art bioavailability evaluation, metabolomic profiling, and clarification of mechanistic pathways in human health. This Research Topic seeks to unify the research pipeline from green, sustainable extraction and processing of polyphenols and plant bioactives through to rigorous evaluation of their bioavailability, metabolite signatures, and mechanistic links to metabolic, cardiovascular, and neuroinflammatory health. By encouraging studies that precisely characterize extraction conditions, validate exposure with robust biomarkers, and clarify molecular effects in cellular and preclinical models, this topic aims to bridge current knowledge gaps and improve reproducibility in the field. The key goal is to foster integrated, multidisciplinary approaches that connect advances in extraction, food matrix interactions, and bioactivity to advance effective, evidence-based dietary strategies for chronic disease prevention and management. The scope of this Research Topic centers on multi-disciplinary and integrative studies that link green extraction and processing, food matrix effects, and bioactivity in meaningful health contexts.
