Dietary Protein and Amino Acids in Glucose Homeostasis and Metabolic Regulation

Dietary protein quantity, quality, and amino acid composition are increasingly recognized as important regulators of glucose metabolism and metabolic health. Changes in protein intake can influence insulin sensitivity, glucose utilization, lipid metabolism, energy balance, and metabolic adaptation. However, these effects may differ depending on the source and amount of dietary protein, the balance of individual amino acids, physiological status, and the presence of metabolic dysfunction.Specific amino acids may also exert distinct effects on glucose homeostasis. Branched-chain and insulinogenic amino acids have been linked to insulin secretion, nutrient sensing, hepatic metabolism, and insulin resistance, while targeted amino acid restriction or supplementation may alter metabolic signalling and glucose regulation. Liver-derived factors, including hepatokines and bioactive peptides, may further contribute to the metabolic responses associated with changes in protein and amino acid availability.A better understanding of these mechanisms may support the development of nutritional and molecular approaches for improving glycaemic control and metabolic health. This Research Topic welcomes submissions addressing, but not limited to:• Dietary protein quantity and quality in glucose and lipid metabolism• Low-protein, high-protein, and amino acid-modified dietary interventions• Branched-chain, essential, and insulinogenic amino acids in metabolic regulation• Amino acid sensing, insulin signalling, and glucose homeostasis• Hepatic metabolism, hepatokines, and liver-derived bioactive factors• Nutritional strategies targeting protein and amino acid metabolism in insulin resistance and diabetes Topic editors: Adel Pezeshki Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85301/dietary-protein-and-amino-acids-in-glucose-homeostasis-and-metabolic-regulation
