Dietary Strategies for Neuromuscular Function, Exercise Performance, and Training Adaptations
Neuromuscular function is a fundamental determinant of exercise performance and training adaptations. The capacity to generate and sustain muscular force and power depends on the interaction among neural activation, excitation-contraction coupling, muscle metabolism, and substrate availability. Fatigue-related disturbances within these systems can reduce strength, power, rate of force development, and repeated high-intensity exercise performance while potentially affecting adaptations to chronic exercise training. Although dietary strategies may influence these responses, the physiological mechanisms through which nutrition affects neuromuscular performance and training adaptations remain unclear.A growing body of research has examined how nutritional interventions, including macronutrient manipulation, nutrient-timing strategies, established ergogenic aids, novel dietary supplements, and multi-ingredient formulations, affect muscular performance, fatigue, and training adaptations. Research findings, however, remain inconsistent for many interventions. Differences in intervention type, composition, dosage, timing, participant characteristics, exercise protocols, and outcome measurements complicate comparisons across studies. Moreover, performance outcomes are often reported without complementary physiological assessments that could clarify whether an intervention affects neural activation, muscular contractile function, substrate utilization, fatigue development, recovery, or adaptations to exercise training. This Research Topic aims to advance understanding of how acute and chronic dietary strategies influence neuromuscular function, exercise performance, and training adaptations. Particular interest will be given to studies integrating performance outcomes, such as muscular strength and power, with physiological measures such as electromyography, muscle oxygenation, neuromuscular stimulation, and force- or torque-time characteristics. Key questions include whether dietary interventions can enhance neural or muscular function, delay central or peripheral fatigue, preserve force and power during repeated high-intensity exercise, accelerate neuromuscular recovery, or augment adaptations to exercise training. Studies examining whether dietary interventions augment neuromuscular adaptations to resistance training are also encouraged. The collection also seeks to identify individual and methodological factors that may explain variability across studies and improve the translation of findings into evidence-based practice. We welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:1.
