Digital and Circular Strategies for Sustainable Organizations: From Product Design to Closed-Loop Supply Chains

Sustainable organizations are increasingly challenged to transition from linear production and consumption models toward circular and resource-efficient systems while maintaining competitiveness in dynamic markets. Circular strategies such as reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling aim to extend product lifecycles and reduce environmental impacts. At the same time, advances in digital technologies, including artificial intelligence, IoT, and blockchain, are transforming how organizations collect, analyze, and utilize data across supply chains.Recent research highlights the potential of integrating circular and digital approaches to enhance sustainability performance. However, existing studies often address these domains in isolation, with limited focus on their combined impact on organizational systems. There remains a need for holistic frameworks that connect product design, supply chain operations, and digital infrastructure to enable effective sustainability transitions. The transition toward sustainable organizations remains constrained by fragmented approaches to product design, supply chain management, and digital transformation. While circular economy principles emphasize resource efficiency and lifecycle thinking, their implementation is often limited by a lack of integration across organizational functions and insufficient decision-support mechanisms. Similarly, digital technologies offer significant potential to enhance transparency, traceability, and optimization, yet their role in enabling circular and sustainable systems is not fully understood. This Research Topic aims to address these gaps by investigating how organizations can integrate circular strategies with digital technologies to achieve sustainable operations. It seeks to identify enabling factors, develop robust decision-making frameworks, and advance system-level approaches supported by optimization and simulation methodologies. These approaches are essential for modeling complex, dynamic systems, evaluating trade-offs, and improving resource allocation and operational efficiency. By fostering research that bridges engineering, operations, and digital innovation, this Topic aims to contribute to actionable insights that facilitate the transition toward resilient and resource-efficient organizational systems. This Research Topic focuses on the integration of circular economy strategies and digital technologies to advance sustainable organizations. Contributions are invited on themes including, but not limited to:• Sustainable product design and multi-lifecycle strategies • Closed-loop supply chains, reverse logistics, and remanufacturing systems • Digital enablers of sustainability (AI, IoT, blockchain, data analytics) • Decision-making models and methodologies for enabling sustainable organizations (e.g., MCDM, optimization, simulation, data-driven models • Supply chain governance, transparency, and traceability • Organizational capabilities and barriers to circular and digital transformation • Policy, regulatory, and socio-technical implications Topic editors: RIDVAN AYDIN, Alper Uysal Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/82386/digital-and-circular-strategies-for-sustainable-organizations-from-product-design-to-closed-loop-supply-chains
