Digital and Data‑Driven Technologies for Prevention and Early Detection of Oral Diseases
Oral diseases, including periodontal diseases, dental caries, and oral cancers, remain prevalent global health challenges with significant impacts on quality of life. Early detection and effective prevention are critical to reducing their burden and improving long-term oral health outcomes. Emerging digital and data‑driven technologies are transforming preventive dentistry by enabling precise risk assessment, timely diagnosis, and personalized intervention strategies before disease progression occurs. This Research Topic focuses on innovative technological advancements that support the design, delivery, and evaluation of preventive strategies and early detection pathways for oral diseases. Cutting-edge tools such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, digital imaging, biosensors, and multi-omics analyses are reshaping how clinicians and public health practitioners identify at-risk individuals, stratify preventive care, and monitor oral health status over time. Furthermore, digital health platforms and teledentistry expand access to preventive services and empower patients through education, behavior change support, and ongoing engagement. We invite original research and comprehensive reviews exploring the application of these technologies to enhance preventive strategies, improve screening accuracy, and facilitate early intervention across diverse populations and care settings. Contributions addressing challenges related to integration into clinical workflows, ethical and legal considerations, data governance, and real-world implementation in both clinical and community environments are also welcome.Key themes include, but are not limited to:• AI and machine learning for risk prediction, triage, and early diagnosis of oral diseases• Advanced imaging and biosensor technologies for non-invasive screening and continuous oral health monitoring• Multi-omics and biomarker discovery for personalized, risk-based prevention• Digital health tools and teledentistry platforms promoting patient engagement, behavior change, and remote monitoring• Population-based approaches leveraging technology to improve oral health equity and access to preventive care• Ethical, legal, and practical aspects of adopting innovative preventive technologies in routine careBy highlighting digital and data‑driven innovations within a preventive framework, this collection aims to accelerate the translation of research into practical solutions that reduce oral disease incidence and support lifelong oral health.
