Digital and Intelligent Technologies for Energy Transition and Decarbonization in the Oil and Gas Industry

Driven by the global energy transition and the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, the oil and gas industry is undergoing a profound transformation toward low-carbon, intelligent, and sustainable energy systems. Conventional hydrocarbon operations now face increasing pressure to improve carbon performance, reduce methane and CO2 emissions, integrate clean energy technologies, and support broader pathways toward energy transition and decarbonization. Meanwhile, rapid advances in artificial intelligence, machine learning, IoT, digital twin technologies, advanced sensing, and carbon management tools have created new opportunities to reshape the industry's role in a lower-carbon energy future. This Research Topic aims to explore cutting-edge digital, intelligent, and engineering solutions that enable decarbonization and energy transition across the oil and gas value chain. It focuses on carbon emission reduction, low-carbon operational transformation, CCUS, methane mitigation, electrification, renewable energy integration, and data-driven decision-making for sustainable energy systems. We welcome original research papers, case studies, and review articles that advance the understanding, development, and field application of low-carbon technologies and digital tools in energy transition contexts. All submissions should be rigorous, relevant, and contribute significantly to reducing carbon emissions, improving environmental performance, and accelerating the transition toward intelligent, efficient, and sustainable energy systems. Contributions should emphasize decarbonization, carbon management, and low-carbon innovation rather than conventional oil and gas production or extraction.Topics include, but are not limited to:- Digital technologies and AI-based methods for carbon emission monitoring, accounting, and reduction in oil and gas systems- Methane leakage detection, quantification, mitigation, and predictive management using advanced sensing, IoT, and data analytics- Carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) technologies and integrated carbon management strategies- Digital twin and edge computing applications for low-carbon energy assets and decarbonization decision support- Electrification, renewable energy integration, and hybrid energy systems for reducing operational carbon intensity- Machine learning, big data analytics, and optimization methods for energy efficiency and emissions reduction- Lifecycle carbon assessment, ESG-oriented evaluation, and sustainability metrics for energy transition pathways- Low-carbon hydrogen, geothermal, waste heat recovery, and other emerging technologies supporting energy transition- Case studies of field-scale decarbonization, carbon management, and intelligent low-carbon transformation in energy systems Topic editors: Xingyuan Liang, Guoqing Han, Leilei Zhang, Xin Lu Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/83318/digital-and-intelligent-technologies-for-energy-transition-and-decarbonization-in-the-oil-and-gas-industry
