Digital Biomarkers in Neuropsychology: Advancing Early Detection, Differential Diagnosis, and Clinical Monitoring in Neurodegenerative and Neurological Disorders.
Digital biomarkers in neuropsychology are emerging as a transformative frontier in cognitive and clinical assessment. Technological advances in eye tracking, speech and language analytics, wearable sensors, and computerized cognitive testing now enable continuous, fine-grained monitoring of neurocognitive functioning beyond the traditional clinical environment. Recent studies have demonstrated that these digital measures can detect subtle behavioral and cognitive changes associated with early neurodegenerative processes, offering potential improvements in diagnostic sensitivity, functional prediction, and treatment monitoring. Despite growing enthusiasm and rapid technological development, key challenges remain in validating digital metrics against established neuropsychological tools, ensuring their ecological validity, and developing robust frameworks for cross-platform data harmonization. Addressing these questions requires a concerted interdisciplinary effort that bridges neuropsychology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, data science, and clinical medicine. This Research Topic aims to advance a comprehensive understanding of how digital biomarkers can enhance neuropsychological assessment and support early detection, differential diagnosis, and longitudinal monitoring of neurological and neurodegenerative disorders. Specifically, it seeks to identify the cognitive and neural mechanisms captured by digital measures, establish standardized methodological approaches for their validation, and explore pathways for their clinical translation. We welcome studies that explore the integration of digital biomarkers into existing assessment networks, examine their sensitivity to disease progression or therapeutic response, and evaluate their cost-effectiveness and accessibility in real-world contexts. To gather further insights within the intersection of digital technology and clinical neuropsychology, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: o Development and validation of speech-, language-, and eye-tracking-based digital biomarkers for cognitive impairmento Digital cognitive task paradigms and remote assessment methodologies for aging and neurological populationso Integration of multimodal digital metrics with traditional neuropsychological batterieso Predictive modeling and machine learning approaches for early disease detection and differential diagnosiso Ethical and clinical implications of digital biomarker implementation in neuropsychological practiceo Cross-disciplinary frameworks linking neuropsychology, neurology, AI, and biomedical engineeringo Translational studies demonstrating the ecological validity and clinical impact of digital biomarkersWe encourage contributions from a range of article types, including Original Research, Methods, Systematic Reviews, Perspectives, and Data Reports.
