Digital Health Technologies for Healthy Ageing: Digital Biomarkers, Connected Care and Clinical Translation
Population ageing is accelerating worldwide, increasing the need for scalable approaches that preserve health, function, independence and quality of life. At the same time, wearable sensors, connected medical devices, mobile health, ambient sensing, and artificial intelligence are enabling continuous assessment beyond traditional clinical encounters. These technologies can generate digital biomarkers of mobility, cardiovascular function, sleep, cognition, frailty, and daily activity, supporting earlier detection of decline and more personalized care. However, many innovations remain fragmented across engineering, data science, and geriatric medicine, with important gaps in validation, interoperability, usability, equity and clinical implementation. A translational forum focused on digital health technologies for healthy ageing is therefore timely. This Research Topic aims to advance clinically meaningful digital health technologies that support healthy ageing across the continuum from prevention and early risk detection to monitoring, rehabilitation and independent living. We seek work that moves beyond proof-of-concept algorithms toward robust sensing, validated digital biomarkers, interpretable analytics, and connected-care solutions that can operate in real-world settings. Particular attention will be given to longitudinal and multimodal approaches that capture changes in physiological, functional, and behavioral health; technologies that enable aging in place and remote care; and studies addressing user-centered design, data quality, fairness, privacy, interoperability, regulatory considerations, and implementation. By bringing together biomedical engineers, clinicians, gerontologists, data scientists, and rehabilitation researchers, the collection will identify pathways for translating digital innovation into measurable improvements in healthspan and quality of life.We invite Original Research, Methods, Technology and Code, Brief Research Reports, Reviews, Systematic Reviews, and Perspectives. Key themes include but are not limited to the following: • Wearable and contactless sensing • ECG, PPG, and other physiological monitoring • Digital biomarkers of frailty, mobility, falls, sleep, cognition, and cardiovascular health• AI and explainable AI for longitudinal risk prediction • Multimodal data fusion • Smart-home and ambient-assisted living systems • Remote patient monitoring and hospital-at-home technologies • Digital therapeutics and technology-enabled rehabilitation • Human-centered design and accessibility for older adults • Real-world and clinical validation • Interoperability, cybersecurity, and privacy • Regulatory science • Implementation or health-economic evaluation Contributions should demonstrate a clear connection to healthy ageing, functional independence, or age-related care and should emphasize technological innovation together with evidence of validity, usability, clinical relevance, or translational potential.Topic Editor Ahsan Khandoker is the founder of Vital Rhythms LLC.
