Digital Innovations in Sports Vision: Assessment, Training, and Performance Optimization
Visual performance is central to sports participation, influencing the detection of relevant stimuli, anticipation of trajectories, visual attention, decision-making, and visuomotor coordination. Yet many visual abilities are still assessed through static laboratory tests that may not reflect the dynamic, complex, and context-dependent demands of real-world sports. Recent advances in wearable eye tracking, virtual and augmented reality, sensors, visuocognitive platforms, digital biomarkers, and artificial intelligence are enabling more objective and sport-specific investigation of visual behavior. These technologies can characterize where and when athletes direct attention, how visual search adapts to task demands, and how visual responses change with expertise, fatigue, training, injury, or recovery. Nevertheless, important gaps remain concerning the validity, reliability, reproducibility, and comparability of available tools; the relationship between digital measures and sports performance; the interpretation of multimodal datasets; and the effectiveness of technology-supported interventions. A stronger evidence base is needed to distinguish technological innovation from demonstrated utility and to clarify how digital approaches can support performance, safety, rehabilitation, injury prevention, and active living. This Research Topic aims to advance the scientific understanding and practical application of digital technologies for assessing, monitoring, training, and rehabilitating visual performance in sport. It will examine what information these technologies provide, how visual and visuocognitive measures should be validated, and whether they offer meaningful advantages over conventional assessment approaches. Contributions may address the relationship between technology-derived visual variables and sport-specific performance, as well as the effects of training, fatigue, recovery, experience, and injury on visual behavior. The Research Topic also seeks evidence concerning the implementation, personalization, ethical use, and clinical or performance relevance of digitally supported interventions. To gather further insights in the development, validation, and application of digital technologies for sports vision and active living, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Development and validation of digital tools for visual function and visual performance assessmentEye tracking and visual behavior during sport-specific tasks or situations close to real practiceVisuocognitive assessment, training, and decision-makingVirtual reality, augmented reality, and immersive simulationWearable technologies, sensors, and digital biomarkersIntegration of visual, motor, physiological, and performance-related dataArtificial intelligence and computational methods for visual data analysisTechnology-assisted visual training and rehabilitationLongitudinal monitoring of fatigue, recovery, injury, and return to activityApplications of digital sports vision technologies to performance, safety, and injury preventionCross-device comparability, standardization, reproducibility, and data interpretationEthical, practical, and individualized implementation in sports and active livingAppendix: We invite original research articles, validation and methodological studies, intervention studies, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and perspective papers from sports science, optometry, ophthalmology, neuroscience, biomedical engineering, computer science, rehabilitation, and related disciplines.
