Digital Methods in Built Environment
Professional services in the subject field of built environment have been significantly transforming by adopting digital technologies since the 1990s. It can be widely recognized that digital technologies, which enable the design, development, and application of hardware and software systems to collect, process, store, transmit, and use data, information, and knowledge, have been continuously adopted in the built environment sector for various applications at strategic, tactical, and operation levels. Progresses from research, development, deployment, and adoption of innovative digital solutions show the efficacy of digital methods for not only project-specific tasks but also sector-wide issues. This Research Topic is to provide a convergence research forum for academics and professionals around the world to present theoretical and practical experiences and knowledge on digital methods adopted in the subject field of built environment. The goal of this RT is to develop a unique multidisciplinary topical collection to showcase the advances of professional knowledge and technical solutions that can enhance the level of professional services across all work stages in built environment projects and the whole sector in the era of Industry 5.0.The editors of this RT welcome authors with specialty interests in related subject areas and ambition to generate new knowledge and/or solutions to inform academic research and professional practices in the context of adopting digital technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Building Information Modelling (BIM), Digital Twins (DT), Geographical Information System (GIS), Internet of Things (IoT), Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), robotics and automation, and computer simulations, etc. across professional processes for the built environment. The scope of this RT covers all issues relating to research, development, and applications for adopting digital meth0ods in the subject field of built environment. Issues covered by this RT are connected to, but not limited to, the following listed areas:- Advances in digitalization in major built environment project delivery. - Challenges and decision-making support at individual work stages including planning, design, construction, operation, and maintenance, etc.- Digital reengineering for professional excellence in built environment. - Digital trends and responses in the built environment sector.- Learning legacies of digital transformation in built environment oriented practices.- Mechanics and impacts of digital solutions for sectoral and technical disruptions.- Solutions and implications for adopting digital technologies to enhance capacities and performances among workforce, products, and processes.- The body of knowledge for adopting digital technologies in built environment.
