Digital Sustainable Finance: Programmable and Verifiable Financial Systems for Real-World Impact

Financial systems are undergoing rapid digital transformation across banking, capital markets and payments. Real-time data architectures, digital identity, machine-readable information, tokenized assets, distributed ledgers and AI-enabled decision-making are reshaping how financial information is generated, verified, interpreted and acted upon. Sustainable, impact and development finance, however, remain constrained by fragmented standards, inconsistent regulation, bespoke verification and institution-specific implementation. These limitations raise transaction costs, restrict interoperability and hinder automation, scalability and institutional integration. Although research has demonstrated the value of blockchain and related technologies in specific sustainability applications, less attention has been given to the wider digital architecture required to connect credible real-world performance information with institutional financial infrastructure. This Research Topic aims to advance Digital Sustainable Finance as an interdisciplinary field examining how blockchain and complementary digital technologies can strengthen trust, verification, automation and accountability across the financial lifecycle. It defines the field as the digital infrastructure, data architectures and programmable financial systems required for trustworthy, adaptive and outcome-oriented sustainable finance. Contributions will examine how real-world performance becomes credible, machine-readable and financially actionable, and how verified outcomes influence risk assessment, use-of-proceeds and outcome verification, capital allocation, contractual terms, payments, settlement and governance. The Topic also seeks to identify the technical, regulatory, organizational and societal conditions required for responsible operation at scale, including interoperability, legal recognition, privacy, cybersecurity, market integrity, financial inclusion and impact additionality. It will thereby help establish Digital Sustainable Finance as a coherent field rather than a collection of isolated technological applications. We invite submissions across four complementary themes:Theme 1 - Measurement and Verification: dMRV, IoT evidence, assurance, impact and use-of-proceeds verification, digital identity, verifiable credentials and provenance.Theme 2 - Decision-Making and Capital Allocation: outcome-based, sustainability-linked, impact-linked and blended finance; risk and impact management; market microstructure; incentives; and integration of verified performance into decisions.Theme 3 - Execution and Automation: smart contracts, tokenization, programmable money and instruments, settlement, stablecoins, conditional payments and agentic finance.Theme 4 - Governance and Institutional Transformation: interoperability, standards, digital public infrastructure, legal and regulatory interoperability, responsible AI, privacy, cybersecurity and institutional adoption. We welcome Original Research, Reviews, Perspectives, Hypothesis and Theory articles, Methods, Code and Data papers, pilots and industry case studies, including work on implementation barriers and future directions.
